Tips for your gift card email

  • Make buying fast. Link the button directly to your gift card purchase page, not your homepage.
  • Say whether cards arrive by email right away or must be mailed or picked up, and give the last day to order for each.
  • If you add a bonus card, state the amount, who receives it and when it can be used. A bonus valid in January or February can bring guests back in slower months.
  • Spell out the rules in plain words: expiration, whether it can be used for takeout, and whether it has cash value. Federal and state laws limit when gift cards can expire, so check them before you write your terms.
  • Keep the offer to one sentence. If it takes a paragraph to explain, simplify it.
  • Send two or three reminders from mid-November through December. Gift buyers are busy and often mean to buy and forget.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving out the expiration and usage rules, then having to explain them at the table.
  • Making the bonus offer too complicated to understand in one read.
  • Sending only once. A reminder or two catches the people who meant to buy and did not.

Matching SMS

{restaurant}: Holiday gift cards are available now. Give a great meal: {cta_url} Reply STOP to opt out.

Text messages need their own, explicit opt-in. An email subscription does not cover SMS.

FAQ

Restaurant Gift Card Email questions

When should I send a restaurant gift card email?

Start in mid-November and send a reminder in early December. If you sell e-gift cards that arrive instantly, one more reminder in the last few days catches last-minute buyers.

Should I offer a bonus with gift cards?

Many restaurants do, for example a bonus card with each gift card purchase. Keep the bonus easy to explain, and put the amount, dates and any limits in the email.

Do restaurant gift cards expire?

Federal rules generally require a minimum of five years before a purchased gift card can expire, and some states go further. Check the rules where you operate before you set your terms.

How do I sell more gift cards by email?

Link directly to the purchase page, say how fast the card arrives, give the last day to order, and send two or three reminders across the season.
