Email Marketing for Restaurants

Restaurant Review Request Email template

Reviews are often the first thing a new guest reads about your restaurant, and the easiest way to get more is to ask while the meal is fresh. This template asks for an honest review with a direct link and offers nothing in exchange, which keeps you within Google and Yelp policies.

Goal
Get more guests to leave an honest public review of their visit.
When
One to two days after the visit, while the meal is still fresh. Trigger it from a reservation, online order or loyalty check-in, and send it to every guest, not only the ones you expect to be happy.
Tones
Warm, playful, polished

Tips for your review request email

  • Send it within a day or two of the visit, when the meal is still fresh in the guest's mind.
  • Link straight to your Google review form (the share link in your Google Business Profile), not to your website or profile page. One tap should land on the star rating.
  • Do not offer anything in exchange for a review: no discount, free dessert or contest entry. Google and Yelp policies forbid incentivized reviews, and breaking them can get reviews removed and put your listing at risk.
  • Send it to every guest, not only the ones you think were happy. Google's policy prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews.
  • Yelp discourages businesses from asking customers for reviews, so link to Google by default and read Yelp's guidelines before adding a Yelp link.
  • Reply to reviews, good and bad, in a calm and specific way. Future guests read the replies too.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Offering a discount, free dish or contest entry for a review. It breaks platform policy, and reviews written for a reward can be removed.
  • Sending the request only to guests you know were happy, which platforms call review gating.
  • Linking to your homepage or Google profile instead of the review form, which adds steps and loses people.

Matching SMS

FAQ

Restaurant Review Request Email questions

How do I ask restaurant customers for a Google review?

Send a short email a day or two after the visit with a direct link to your Google review form. You can copy that link from your Google Business Profile.

Can I offer a discount or freebie for a review?

No. Google and Yelp policies forbid incentivized reviews, so do not offer a discount, dish or contest entry in return for one.

When is the best time to send a review request email?

One to two days after the visit, while the guest remembers the meal. Trigger it from a reservation, order or check-in so it only goes to people who dined with you.

Should I send review requests only to happy guests?

No. Google's policy prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews, so send the same request to every guest who agreed to hear from you.
